Pegeen’s (1925–1967) paintings read like a wordless diary: scenes from life, reconstructed memories, and imaginary visions in which the ordinary takes on an air of strangeness. Daughter of Peggy Guggenheim, she grows up within the orbit of Surrealism and the European avant-garde, in close proximity to many of its key figures, yet develops a voice that is unmistakably her own. Each canvas becomes a theatrical stage where characters coexist without any real dialogue, in an enclosed space where silence reigns and emotion flows beneath the surface.
